Determined to avoid convenience store snacks and drive-thrus during my 16-hour journey, I prepped aheadβbut I wanted something more exciting than plain grilled patties while staying true to my animal-based lifestyle.
Here are four incredible burger combos that brought excitement to my trip and will do the same for your mealsβwhether youβre on the road or grilling at home!
Why These Combos Work
Burgers are simple, satisfying, and protein-packed, but letβs face it: they can get a little repetitive. Thatβs why Iβve created four epic combinations to elevate your patties. Each recipe brings unique flavors and textures to the tableβor in my case, on a 16-hour road trip! Keeping things fresh, fun, and delicious.
What Makes These Burgers Stand Out?
Animal-Based Ingredients: These combos feature nutrient-dense, animal-based staples like beef bacon, bone marrow, and warmed fruit.
Balanced Flavors: Sweet, savory, and smoky come together in perfect harmony.
Road-Trip Friendly: Easy to prep ahead and store, these are great for on-the-go meals.
The Recipes
Sweet & Smoky Perfection: Venison and Cranberries and Beef Bacon
A perfect balance of homemade cranberries and smoky, crispy bacon. The venisonβs mild flavor ties it all together for a burst of excitement in every bite.
Ingredients:
1/2 lb ground venison from First Light Farms (code: ANIMALBB)
1/2 cup homemade dried cranberries
Beef bacon from Miller's Bio Farm (code: BAE)β uncured, no sugar, nitrate- and nitrite-free
Steps:
Chop the bacon into small pieces and toss in a cast-iron skillet.
Cook the bacon in the oven at 375Β°F for about 30-40 minutes, stirring halfway through, until your desired doneness is achieved.
Once cooked, let the bacon cool.
Fold the bacon and cranberries nicely into the ground venison.
Grill these patties on your favorite grill (I love my Schwank Grill! - code: ANIMALBASEDBAE), or cook stovetop.
Gourmet Twist: Venison and Baked Pears and Bone Marrow
Rich and indulgent, this combo feels like a gourmet meal. The roasted pears add sweetness, while the bone marrow brings depth and creaminess.
Ingredients:
1/2 lb ground venison from First Light Farms (code: ANIMALBB)
1 pear
1 bone marrow from Shirttail Creek Farm (code: BAE10)
Steps:
Get a roasting dish and add the pears, halved and face down. Toss in the marrow bones and a little rosemary for extra flavor.
Cook in the oven at 375Β°F for about 25 minutes.
Once cooked, remove from the oven, let cool, chop the pears, and add a teaspoon (or more) of marrow. About half a pear works well for this.
Mix everything into the ground venison, then cook like a regular burger patty.
Sweet & Savory Surprise: Venison and Banana
Trust me, this combo is magic. The natural sweetness of the banana elevates the venison for a truly unique flavor.
Ingredients:
1/2 lb ground venison from First Light Farms (code: ANIMALBB)
1/2 banana
Steps:
Peel the banana and mix it well with the ground venison.
Cook like a regular burger patty.
Savory & Creamy Comfort: Venison and Squash and Cheddar
This combo is hearty and satisfying, with the squash adding texture and cheddar bringing creamy goodness.
Ingredients:
1/2 lb ground venison from First Light Farms (code: ANIMALBB)
1/4 cup cooked squash (butternut squash is great for this)
1/4 cup cheddar cheese from Miller's Bio Farm (code: BAE)
Steps:
Roast the butternut squash at 375Β°F with a little olive oil for about 40 minutes until tender.
Once cooked, add the squash to the ground venison, then mix in the cheddar cheese.
Mix well and cook like a regular burger patty.
